Title: Parents as language facilitators: The It Takes Two to Talk® Hanen Program: Approved for 0.15 ASHA CEUs


Abstract: This session describes the Hanen It Takes Two to Talk® Program, which provides parent-implemented language intervention to families of young children with language disorders. This manualized program adheres to principles of adult education and focuses on building parents’ capacity to facilitate their child’s language development by using evidence-based strategies within everyday interactions.


Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the philosophy and components of the It Takes Two to Talk® Program.
  • Summarize the four stages of communication in the It Takes Two to Talk® Program.
  • Explain the difference between interaction goals and communication goals in the It Takes Two to Talk® Program.
  • List four principles of adult education utilized in the It Takes Two to Talk® Program.
  • Explain the purpose of each of the four parts of the teaching-learning cycle utilized in It Takes Two to Talk® group sessions.
  • Describe how the video feedback process facilitates parents’ mastery of strategies.


Presenter bio: 

Dashiel Brockman, M.Sc., S-LP(C), Reg. CASLPO, is a speech-language pathologist at The Hanen Centre who is passionate about supporting families and their young children’s communication development. He leads It Takes Two to Talk® Programs for parents and is involved in the development of the It Takes Two to Talk® Program resources. Dashiel regularly presents on the effectiveness of parent-implemented intervention and the Hanen approach to university students. Financial - Employee of The Hanen Centre, which holds the copyright to all the materials produced at the centre. Dashiel receives no financial benefit from the sale of Hanen materials. 




This event is being offered complimentary to current OSHA Members, through a partnership with Hanen Centre. Registration information obtained by OSHA will be shared with Hanen. Hanen will provide information on accessing this virtual training, process CEUs, and provide certification for attendance.
